We were made to be with God in Paradise but how do we get there? We look to the Saints of the Church. Men, women, and children who loved God and wanted nothing but to please Him are those we look up to in the Catholic Church, individuals who we want to emulate. When you begin to read stories about the saints, you learn they come from all parts of the world, cultures, different classes, and many led a  heathen lifestyle before they were converted to knowing what they truly were intended for – to know, love, and serve God.

When someone is preparing to receive the sacrament of Confirmation, there is an emphasis on choosing a saint name. In antiquity, people were identified who they belonged to. When someone became Christian, they would change their name that was representative of a Christian. We have seen God changing the names of some people in Scripture. For example, Abram became Abraham. Simon became Peter. Saul became Paul.

If you are in the process of choosing a saint name for Confirmation here are  some tips on how to get started.

  1. Pray. Seriously, pray. Sit/kneel in a church, Adoration chapel and ask for the help from Mary, Our Mother, Jesus Our Lord, God Almighty, and the Holy Spirit for inspiration and guidance on choosing a saint name.
  2. Research. There are a few great websites that you can use to help you on your search that I have included here:

3. Questions to ask yourself as you research

Are you named after a saint?

Does your family have a devotion to a particular saint?

What are your interests? Look for saints and who/what they are a patron saint for.

What is an area that you struggle in and need help? Find a saint that has those same struggles to                    see how they overcame them.

As you research, are there saints that have interesting stories that makes you want to learn more                  about them?

4. Pray. Seriously, I mean pray AGAIN. Ask for guidance to know out of those that you have researched which saint is calling out to you wanting to be YOUR helper?

5. Once you have chosen a Saint. Find or write a prayer asking for YOUR saint to intercede for you. They will be praying for you in Heaven.
